YORKSHIRE COAST- "STAY FOR LESS £££"

YORKSHIRE is the largest County in the North of England part bordering the North Sea Coast & is quite spectacular. GB's "Special Yorkshire Coast Trail" starts from YORK visiting SCARBOROUGH (SCAR) a famous Seaside Town which came to prominence in Victorian times as a Spa Resort with two magnificent Sandy Bays & impressive cliff top Castle between. Next it's to ROBIN HOODS BAY (RHB) an old Smugglers Refuge with Fossils & Jet on the Beach. Finally to WHITBY, an ancient Fishing & Sea Port up the Coast, with Olde Worlde Streets & Harbour, Here the World famous Explorer Captain James Cook learned to sail & later discovered Australia.Returning I venture inland to see the vast Heather Moors, tread on a 2000 year old Roman Road & then take a ride on an Old Steam Railway to PICKERING before YORK.

ACCOMMODATION

NO 1 -SCARBOROUGH YHA at Burniston Rd. Scar. YO13 0DA (on the North outskirts of town) tele 01723 361 176 - £16 pn incl. sheets, 50 beds in 4&6 bunk bedded dorms. Self - cat. kitchen & evening meal provided, lounge, dining room, meeting rooms in annex, laundry. It’s a homely & quiet hostel (when a school party is not staying) tucked away in a river ravine a little way out of the Town.

NO 2 -BOGGLE HOLE YHA, at Mill Beck, Fylingthorpe, nr Whitby YO22 4UQ (3/4 mile from the RHB Bus Stop, either walk S. along the beach to the Hostel gorge or the top path if the tide is in) tele 08707705704 - www.yha.org.uk - £16 in 10 bed dorm. showers are along the corridor . Long self-catering kitchen on ground floor with all facilities & large dining room adjacent, also serves breakfast & evening meals at extra cost. This is a super Hostel, right on the Beach front with its own Smuglers Cave?

NO 3 -WHITBY YHA on East Cliff, Whitby (a most spectacular position in the grounds of the Abbey, near to the Churchyard where the story book ghost, Dracula, is said to roam!) tele 0870 770 6088 - www.yha.org.uk - £16 pn - 58 beds in 2, 4, 6 & 10 & 1x 22 bedded dorms. Basic self – cat. kitchen, evening meals also provided, rustic lounge & games room, laundry. It’s a “top” Hostel the only challenge is the 199 steps you have to climb from the Town below to get here (& back)

FOOD in Scar. for self-catering is best bought at the South Bay TESCO Supermarket at the top of pedestrian Main Street, just behind the Rail Station. For a “treat” ,however, have a traditional British "Fish n Chip " Supper with mushy peas, bread & butter, & a cup of tea, at a South Harbour restaurant. For RHB you need to stock up although meals are provided at this remote Hostel & there is a local but pricy shop in the Village half a mile away. Whitby is much better with 2 large Supermarkets in the harbour area – SOMMERFIELD (NO1) & COOP -also lots of good "Fish n Chip" Shops are around Town.

TRAVELLING AROUND starting from YORK with prime Road & Rail links take a Bus or Train to Scarborough. To RHB is a Bus route only, N along the Coast. Then to Whitby is a choice of a spectacular walk via the Cleveland Way Path, or more directly another Bus from RHB. The next leg is a either a Bus or Special Train to Grosmont, then a special Steam Train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Goathland, & Pickering then back to York by Bus – got all that? A good map of the area is recommended then it’ll all make sense & a N. Yorks. Bus timetable is also essential, so pick one up in YORK.
