YORK , in the North of England, was started as a Roman Fort on the River Ouse in 71AD & called “Eboracum”. After the Romans left in 410 the Anglo Saxons took over & built the first wooden Church to St Paul in 627. Vikings then invaded & captured York in 868, later to be defeated by the Danes in 1066 under King Harold. Harold was then killed in Battle of Hastings in 1066 by the French /Norman King William the Conqueror. So York has a very Historic past with many monuments & structures to show.

FOOD – a major Supermarket branch of - SAFEWAY - is to be found just outside the York City walls to the Northeast, off St Maurices Road . More central is a Marks & Spencer Store, which has an excellent range of foods but a little more expensive. There are also lots of smaller Shops & central Market where you can get basic needs. Eating out is also well catered for with many Restaurants and Quick Food outlets in and around the City Centre.
TRAVELLING AROUND – there is a special “York City Tour” Bus for a quick look around, but to discover the hidden passages & streets in York is one of great surprises so you really need to walk to seek out these special experiences, with a good town map from the Info. Centre.
“FREE” SIGHTS TO SEE
1. NATIONAL RAIL MUSEUM– Vast collection of exhibits from start of the Railways 1825 to date.
2. ROMAN FORT – Remains can still be seen near the City wall & also within & outside the Minster.
3.CITY WALLS – Built by the Normans , for protection, it's a unique walking experience.
4. ”SHAMBLES”– Typical Elizabethan Street with Shops, which over hang the narrow walkway.
5. DICK TURPIN – a local Highwayman, who was hanged in York , find his protected grave
6.CITY STREETS– Many alleyways & side streets lead into many fascinating locations.
7. ST. WILLIAMS COLLEDGE – One of the first public schools in England with old beams &
8. RACE COURSE – Vast open area just outside the City where hangings took place in the past
9. PUBLIC LIBRARY – with lots of Local Historic information, a reading / rest room & Internet.
10. CENTRAL MARKET– a colourful ancient market selling Produce, Clothing & Souvenirs.
CHARGE SIGHTS TO SEE
1. YORK MINSTER – Gothic Cathedral, completed in 1472, with ancient Stained Glass Windows
2. “JORVIC” CENTRE – Where you can see an original, recreated, Viking Town , smells & all.
3. CASTLE MUSEUM – contains lots of local artefacts & information on the City's History
4. CLIFFORDS TOWER– An imposing fortified enclosure, on a hill with a shameful past!
5.GHOST HUNTING – A special evening walk with real “Scary” stories & maybe “?”
6. YORKSHIRE MUSEUM – Exhibits from Yorkshires past, including a special Jewel found nearby
