VIENNA is Capital of the Republic if Austria, established in 1918 after WW1. It lies on the banks of the River Danube & at the foothills of the mighty Alpine Mountains . Another Great European City, originally the Seat of the Hapsburg Family who ruled most of Europe from 1273. Of unmistakable cosmopolitan atmosphere it retains a distinctive charm & native flair of its historic past with Supreme Structures - Hofburg, Belvedere & Schonbrunn & Musical Masters - Strauss, Mozart & Beethoven.

Small self-catering kitchen on 1st floor with microwave, fridge & crocks also laundry downstairs. Friendly Hostel with meeting/eating room, reception/ infomation area & rear garden/ courtyard to Socialise. U-Bahn, Westbahnhof
Reserve - Jugend her berge Mythen gasse at Mythen gasse 7 (Closest to the centre, along Burg gasse, but in a boring area) tele 523 63 16 - www.jugendherberge.at - E 18 for 4 to 8 bunk dorms. No Kitchen but meals provided in this efficient hostel with attractive rear garden area. U-Bahn, Volkstheatre then bus 48a to Neubau gasse,
Cheap – Turmherberge "Don Bosco" on Lechner Strasse 12, (East of Centre, in the Bell Tower, open Mar/Nov) tele 1713 14 94 - E6 pn for dorms on 6th floot &. Basic ground floor kitchen. U-Bahn, Kardinal-Nagl-Platz. Unique with Bells!
FOOD, many National Supermarkets are found around City centre & near No 1 Hostel is - Zielpunkt - the best value followed by Billa offering most needs but at Austrian high prices. In the City Centre check out the Wiener, Pizza & Cake Kiosks, the treats on offer are hard to resist.
TRAVELLING AROUND - a combination of U-bahn & walking is best in this City but be careful of “jay walking” which is illegal & you can be fined on the spot. Bikes also share the footpaths so again watch out. On the U-Bahn, 5 lines are in operation ( colour coded, U1 to 4 & 6) with 5? under construction. The S -Bahn or Schnellbahn is the cheapest way of getting to the Airport & day trips out of the City. The system is simple & single tickets (E1.50) are bought from Newsagents (Tabak) or ticket m/cs, you can also buy a 24hr (E5) or 72hr(E12) Travel Pass for all U & S-Bahn trains,trams & busses, for central Zone100. All tickets must be placed into the Blue stamping m/cs first before starting your journey, wait for the “ping”, then hold onto it.
“FREE” SIGHTS TO SEE
1. St Stephens Cathedral – with Ceramic Tile Roof & magnificent South Tower, known as “Steffi”
2. Prater - Giant Ferris Wheel from 1897 & immortalised in the film “The Third Man”
3. Naschmarkt – is a traditional Food Market held on weekdays & flea market on Saturdays
4. Kaffee Houses – Pole first sold Turkish coffee in 1685, Café Sperl from 1880 was A.Hitler's favorite
5. Donaupark – with 827ft Donauturm Tower on the banks of the Danube, good for a fresh air walk
6. Schonbrunn Park – the finest & best preserved French style Gardens of the Baroque period
7 . Karntner Strasse – the principal Shopping Street in the Central area so check it out!
8. Karlskirche – St Charles Church built after the plague in 1713, finest of High Baroque
9. The Ringstrasse – magnificent 1859 boulevard, “Ring” surrounds the City on 3 sides with Old Wall
10. Austrian National Library – founded 1526 it possesses 2million volumes, see also the Staircase

1. Hofburg – Hapsburg Imperial Palace with Gems, Holy Roman Empire Relics & Nat. Emblems
2. Schonbrunn – magnificent 1700 Baroque Palace, SW from the City, second only to Versailles
3. Belvedere Palaces – house a number of Museums with Medieval 19C & 20C Austrian Art
4. Spanish Riding School – north of the Josefsplatz to see the Lipizzaner Stallions famous display
