MONTREUX- STAY FOR LESS "CHF"

MONTREUX is a “Top Class” Resort siting on the far Eastern shores of Lake Geneva, in Switzerland , full of money people & expensive treats. It's position placed it on the main 19C Primary Trail from Northern Europe ( London & Paris ) into Italy ( Florence & Rome ) via the St Bernard Pass. A strategic stopping point was at the nearby - CHATEAU DE CHILLON – then a safe Hostel, now a fairy tale Castle . In more recent times the Town became a favourite of the mega pop group “Queen”, where lead singer Freddie Mercury recorded many songs & said it's a place for “Your Soul to find Peace” - GB agrees!

ACCOMMODATION

NO1 – AUBERGE DE JEUNEESE (YHA) at Territet ( about 1.5 km East of the Town Centre, about 30 mins on Lakeside walkway) tele (0) 21 963 4934 – www.youthhostel.ch/montreux - CHF32 in 6 bed dorm with good breakfast, separate shower rooms &wc's. No S/C facilities but dinner extra but small eating/sitting room & Reception with lockers, Internet & Coffee/Tea m/c. A Smart Modern Hostel next to Lake, ideal location for visiting main Town & Icon Chateau Chillon.

Reserve – Do not stay at the Vevay Hostel as there is no backdrop Mountains to excite, look towards Villeneuve as a better stay over location.

FOOD can be purchased at the central main Shopping Centre in Montreux at the large MIGROS Supermarket

TRAVELLING AROUND after arrival at the Main Rail Station can be made easier with the Bus #1 service which runs regularily from Vevay (West) to Villeneuve (East) passing the Territet Hostel stop on the way but walking the Lakeside Path is Best.

1. GRAND RUE WALK – from the Central Ferry Pier, past Freddie to the Casino on the Lakeside
2. QUAI DES FLUERS WALK – along Residential Prom. with Lakeside Flower Borders & Boats
3. CHILLON WALK – to the Icon Chateau, past Vineyards, Lake Views to this Moated Castle
4. OLD TOWN – take escalator up from Lake Front into Zig Zag Streets with 18C Buildings & Mus.
5. POETS RAMBLE – get Map of “Talking Benches” from Info/C & press seat buttons for Prose
6. PALACE HOTEL – one of the Worlds “Grand Hotels” favoured by the Rich & Famous
7. FREDDIE STATUE – he composed many “Queen” songs here & recorded them at Casino Studios
8. CENTRAL SHOPPING – either at the basic Friday Covered Market or in the exclusive Top Shops
9. BIBLIOTEC – now on the Waterfront location, for Internet, Local Information & Rest
10. VILLENEUVE WALK – stroll on from the Chateau to this Town with wide Lakeside views

2. SWISS CHOCOLATE TRAIN – climbs to Gruyeres (Cheese) then onto Broc (Chocs) & back by 5
